Suspension & steering

Working on the front brake and hub of the Shakewell Racing WRX STI at the Snowy River Sprint
Front corner stripped at Snowy River, with the strut and hub in view.

Rally suspension has to do two contradictory jobs: keep the tyre on a surface that is moving underneath it, and survive being landed on. Travel and damping quality decide the first, and construction quality decides the second. Bushes and arms are the unglamorous half — a perfect damper on a worn control arm bush is still a vague car.

What actually decides it

  • Gravel and tarmac are genuinely different setups, not one setup with different ride heights.
  • Rebuildable dampers cost more up front and less over a season, because gravel will eventually kill a seal no matter whose name is on it.
  • Check what the class allows before spending. Classic and production classes often restrict what you can change.
