Electronics, timing & comms

The roadbook open in the cockpit on a Rally of the Heartland stage
The co-driver's side at the Rally of the Heartland.

The co-driver cannot do their job if they cannot be heard, and neither crew member can do theirs if the trip meter is lying. Rally electronics are mostly about reliability under vibration and water, not features. Note that event tracking and timing units — RallySafe at most Australian events — are hired from the organiser as part of your entry rather than bought.

What actually decides it

  • Intercom quality is decided by the helmet kit and the noise cancelling, not the amplifier.
  • A trip meter is only as good as its calibration and its sensor mounting. Both want doing properly once.
  • Waterproofing and strain relief are what separate gear that lasts a season from gear that lasts an event.
