Brakes

The grooved front brake disc exposed with the wheel off at the Snowy River Sprint
Betsy's grooved front disc, wheel off, at Snowy River.

Rally braking is short, hard and repeated, often from high speed onto a loose surface, and the thing that fails is rarely the disc. Fluid boils, pads glaze, and a soft pedal three stages in costs far more time than a slightly smaller rotor ever would. The gravel-specific addition is the handbrake, which is a driving tool rather than a parking one.

What actually decides it

  • Fluid first. A high-temperature fluid is the cheapest meaningful brake upgrade on any rally car.
  • Pad compound has an operating window. A race pad that is cold on stage one is worse than a fast-road pad that works everywhere.
  • A hydraulic handbrake needs the rear circuit plumbed for it, which is a bigger job than the lever suggests.
