Wheels & tyres

Gold wheel and brake detail on the Shakewell Racing Subaru WRX STI at the Snowy River Sprint
Betsy's gold wheels at the Snowy River Sprint.

Tyres are the only part of a rally car that touches the road and the only one you consume by the set. Compound and construction decide pace; sidewall strength decides whether you finish. On gravel the right answer changes with the surface — hardpack, loose-over-hard, mud and snow all want different things — and the wrong answer usually shows up as a cut, not as lap time.

What actually decides it

  • Carry more spares than you think. A cut sidewall on a stage means running to the end of it on the rim if you have used your spares.
  • Wheel offset and width change the steering weight and how much the tyre rolls onto its shoulder. Matching the tyre to the rim width matters as much as the tyre choice.
  • Gravel wheels take direct hits. Cast wheels crack, and a cracked wheel deflates slowly enough that you find out mid-stage.
