Everything in this category is governed by a standard and a date. Seats, harnesses and extinguishers all expire, and a scrutineer will find the one you forgot. Beyond compliance, this is the gear you wear for ten hours in a hot car — fit and comfort are not a luxury, they are what stops you making mistakes on the last stage.

What actually decides it

Check the homologation date before you buy, not after. FIA seats and harnesses carry an expiry, and secondhand bargains are often close to it.
Motorsport Australia and AASA do not always accept the same standards. Confirm against the regulations of the events you actually run.
A seat has to fit the driver and the mounts. Buying the seat before the mounts is how people end up sitting too high.
